Q & A with Terry:
What are the benefits of learning to wrestle?
Wrestling is a fun, competitive sport that also has many physical benefits. The sport provides a good cardiovascular workout and is a good way to strengthen your balance.
What equipment is needed, and where can it be purchased?
Only the ambition to learn the sport is needed. However, wrestling shoes and headgear are recommended. This may be purchased at a sporting goods store or online.
Is wrestling dangerous?
There are no striking moves in wrestling but there is some risk for injury (as there is in any sport). Amateur wrestling is all about leverage and strength and putting your opponent in positions he doesn't want to be in (and vice versa). Possible injuries would be muscle strains and tears, joint strains and sprains. But you will be training to protect yourself from injury, which will help reduce the risk. You will be matching your strength and leverage against other boys or girls your age and weight, so it is impossible to eliminate all risk for injury.
At what age do you recommend that someone get started in wrestling?
Any ages; however, 5 is usually a very good age to start.
Who do you compete against?
Others wrestlers in the same age and weight group on the same team, same city, same region or even nationally.
Are there college scholarships for wrestlers?
Yes, every year, over 1 billion dollars are awarded to college athletes in the form of wrestling scholarships. These scholarships can be full or partial. When it comes to paying for that college education, every penny helps. A scholarship is also the perfect way to prove that you rank among the best wrestlers in the nation.
